Welcome back to the start of a new calligraphic year.  Hope everyone had a good summer.

Taking a nod at the wonderfully multi-cultural nature of Toronto, this year we will be taking a look at the calligraphy of some different cultures.  Some of the ones we are hoping to get a look at are:  Japanese, Chinese, Hebrew, Arabic, Cyrillic (Russian, Ukraine, Polish, etc.), Korean, Swahili, Sanskrit, Urdu and possibly some other languages.

To start us off on September 13*, the first meeting will be about some new tools and tricks from the Island Magic International Calligraphy conference.  Some of the things we will be experimenting with are:  Ecoline Inks (favoured by Thomas Hoyer), Fabriano Artistico soft press paper, Scor-It Board (recommended by Michael Jacobs) and a technique on black paper with mica powder.  So bring some writing tools, inks and watercolours and come out and play!

On October 11, our very own Cherryl Moote will be featured.  At the Island Magic conference, Cherri gave a wonderful keynote speech about expressing your own voice and shared some details of her own personal journey to find hers.  This talk resonated with many of the attendees at the conference and is well worth sharing with others here at home.  It is applicable to artists of any nature, so, all fellow NPCC artists as well as any calligraphers are invited to come out and be inspired.

At our November 8 meeting, a Japanese calligrapher from Guelph, Noriko Maeda is scheduled to come to talk and demo.   She will bring paper and ink so there will be a chance to try some Japanese writing.

Courses being offered this fall:

  1. A eight week Italic course is being taught by Mark Lurz on Wednesday nights 7:00 – 9:30 starting September 26.
  2. Lily Yee-Sloan is doing a 2 day workshop on ‘Paste Paper Play’ on Saturday, November 3 and 10.  The first day will be to decorate some papers and the subsequent day will be about writing on it.
  3. Reggie Ezell’s year-long course will start on January 12, 2008.  Classes will be held the second Saturday of each month.  This course has been described as ‘boot camp’ for calligraphers.  It is designed to cover many of the basics of calligraphy, from equipment to techniques.  It is not too late to sign up for this course.  In addition, it might be possible to take portions of this course (January to May, June to August or September to December).  Please speak to Charlene Sam (email:  charlene_sam@hotmail.com or phone: 416-236-3301) for details.

Hope to see everyone out at the meetings!

* This is a Jewish High Holiday but it did not get changed.
