Meetings

Our programs feature respected local and international speakers: topics include lettering styles, techniques, materials and tools, history, reproduction techniques and design (traditional, contemporary and electronic). Our extensive library collection allows members to borrow books, magazines, slides and videos.

If you are interested in joining CAGT, please feel free to attend one of our meetings and see what we have to offer.

Meetings are held every second Thursday of the month at Neilson Park Creative Centre, 56 Neilson Drive, Etobicoke at 7:30 p.m.

Feb 8th, 2007 The Scrapbook Craze
All around us the scrapbook craze is raging. What is it all about and how can we participate in it? This evening Ruth Booth will show you a new scrapbooking book that she has authored. She will talk about the different lettering styles that she developed and how she based many of them on traditional hands. Cherryl Moote will demonstrate a monoline copperplate that she developed for scrapbookers and you will receive a full exemplar and practice package to get you started if you want to learn this hand. It would be wonderful if members could bring scrapbooks, especially old ones, that have examples of elegant writing in them.

March 8th, 2007 Gilding - From the Sublime to the Ridiculous
This evening is all about glitz, glitter and gold! You will get to try lots of simple ways to add glamour to your artwork and you'll see demonstrations of several traditional gilding methods. Come and glitz it up!
April 12th, 2007 To Bruges and Back
Margaret Challenger will be taking us on a virtual field trip to Bruges.
May 10th, 2007 Great Lettering of Toronto - This evening you will see a slide show of great lettering in public spaces that can be found in and about Toronto.
We will be featuring work by Louis Wint and by lettering artists from bygone eras who worked in stone. If you know of great lettering please let us know in advance so photos can be taken of it to add to the slide show. We also hope to have a brief demonstration of the tools and materials used in stone carving. A map to the sites will be available so that you can find them on your own this summer.

Facilitator: Ruth Booth
June 14th, 2007 Award Night and Festive Tea
This evening members will bring work that they have done during the year in support of the calligraphic goal they set in October. We will spend the evening celebrating the progress that has been made and the hard work that has been done. Special awards will be given to members who have participated consistently in the Keep Your Nibs Wet campaign. Fancy desserts and tea will be available for all.
